Interview: Lucy Holmes

Local entertainer Lucy Holmes is best known for her highly acclaimed 100% Kylie tribute show.

Being the die-hard Kylie fan he is, Petro caught 100% Kylie a couple of years ago. He was amazed by the attention to detail, from the impeccable costumes sourced from Kylie’s famous photo shoots, music videos and live performances, to the mind-blowing tour renditions used throughout the show. Lucy does the perfect job mimicking Australia’s most cherished gay icon.

Apart from the tribute show, Lucy is heavily involved in other aspects of the entertainment industry. She has performed on shows such as Dancing With The Stars, It Takes Two, The Footy Show, The Singing Bee and Big Brother.

She co-hosted the late night interactive game show The Mint and is currently part of the Light FM breakfast team. She has performed at prestigious events such as the AFL Grand Final, the Men’s Final of the Australian Open (with Guy Sebastian), the Logie Awards and the annual Vision Australia’s Carols By Candlelight.

Interview: Rogue Traders

The morning after their electrifying performance at the annual Logie Awards, the Rogue Traders (founder/producer James Ash and new lead vocalist Mindi Jackson) popped into JOY 94.9 for a fun chat about phase three of the Rogue Trader rollercoaster.

Originally a dance prodution duo consisting of DJs James Ash and Steve Davis, they scored a Top 10 hit back in 2003 with the INXS sampling “One Of My Kind”, from the album We Know What You’re Up To. Phase two began when Neighbours star Natalie Bassingthwaighte fronted the band in 2005. With their trademark brand of attitude-filled, punchy electro-pop-rock, the breakthrough album Here Come The Drums sold over 500,000 copies worldwide and spawned the classics “Voodoo Child”, “Watching You” and “In Love Again”.

The band’s follow-up Better In The Dark produced further hits “Don’t You Wanna Feel” and “I Never Liked You”.  When Natalie left the group in 2008 to pursue a solo career, James searched for a new vocalist. Independent singer Mindi Jackson was chosen, and the group is ready to commence phase three with their forthcoming album Night Of The Living Drums, featuring the addictive new single “Would You Raise Your Hands”.

Interview: Ellie Goulding

While in Australia on a short promotional visit, Petro caught up with the UK pop scene’s latest “it girl” Ellie Goulding.

At just 23 years of age, Ellie’s enchanting mixture of electro, folk and indie-pop has had the music press singing praises. She was awarded “Critics Choice” at the 2010 BRIT Awards, while her debut album Lights (featuring the single “Starry Eyed”) debuted at number one on the UK Charts.

They chat about the making of the album, touring with Little Boots, the wave of alternative-pop females currently dominating the British pop scene, and collaborating with our very own Gabriella Cilmi, amongst plenty of other things.

Interview: Natalie Bassingthwaighte

Supersensual indeed! We were joined by the beautiful Natalie Bassingthwaighte.

It looks to be another big year for the former Neighbours star and Rogue Traders frontwoman, with a swag of different projects under her belt. She is currently hosting the third season of So You Think You Can Dance, will star in the new Underbelly series The Golden Mile, and has just released a brand new single titled “Love Like This”.

The track is the fifth single from her number one selling album 1000 Stars and is the official anthem for Wear It With Pride. The campaign aims to spread awareness about the recent 85 law reforms favoring same sex couples. An EP of remixes has been released digitally, with all proceeds going towards LGBT causes.

The album has also produced two Top 10 Platinum hits with “Alive” and “Someday Soon”, and we ask Nat when we can expect album number two.

Interview: Brendan Maclean

Petro chats to emerging Sydney singer-songwriter Brendan Maclean.

You may recognise his voice as a presenter for Triple J. You may recognise his face from numerous advertising campaigns including Coca Cola, Wii and Virgin Mobile. He’s won two National Youth Week awards. Plus, he’s a crazily talented musician.

Brendan has just released a brand new EP titled White Canvas, a spontaneous mix of quirky indie pop-rock and folk. In the interview, we discuss the making of the EP, the craziness of his live shows and what it means to be an openly gay performer. Petro also drags a ever-so-slightly embarrassing skeleton out of his closet…

Interview: Guy Sebastian

We chatted with one of Australia’s highest selling male artists Guy Sebastian in promotion of his new album Like It Like That.

It’s been almost seven years since Guy was crowned Australia’s very first Australian Idol, and while other winners have faded into obscurity and joined an endless list of one hit wonders (Casey Donovan, Natalie Gauci anyone?), Guy has maintained a loyal fanbase and impressive level of success – 11x platinum over five Top 10 albums (Just As I Am ’03, Beautiful Life ’04, Closer to the Sun ’06, The Memphis Album ’07, Like It Like That ’09), four #1 singles, a string of Top 20 hits, plus a swag of awards and nominations.

In his first interview on JOY 94.9, Guy opens up about his experiences, the fickleness of the industry and the possible reasons for his enjoyed longevity. We discuss the new album Like It Like That and the second single “Art Of Love”, a duet with former American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.
